CIE Lecture - Tin Dredging

Thursday 26th October

Mike Proudfoot of Marine Minerals, will be delivering a talk on Tin Dredging:

Historically much of the tin mined in Cornwall was processed by tin streamers who discharger their tailings into the rivers and streams which eventually accumulated in the sea. The largest of these accumulations lie on the sea bed off the North Coast of Cornwall in water depths of 10 to 20m.

The shareholders of Marine Minerals drilled and dredged these accumulations in the 1980’s under licence from the Crown Estate.  The drilling revealed a resource of 22,000,000 tonnes. Tin concentrate was produced by processing these sands at Hydraulic Tin’s mill.

The current global tin market is very different from that of the 1980’s and Marine Minerals is raising £2,500,000 in the city of London in preparation for undertaking the full scale Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study required for MMO permission (the offshore planning permission equivalent). A Scoping EIA study has been submitted to MMO.

It is intended to recover the sands onto a mother ship, and pre-concentrate them by screening and spiralling. This pre concentrate (5% to 8 % of the original sand lifted) will be landed in Fowey harbour for treatment by gravity and flotation in a new processing plant.

This talk will commence at 6:00pm, and will be held in the Daphne Du Maurier Building, Theatres A, Penryn Campus, TR10 9EZ
